BLACK SABBATH: BACK TO THE BEGINNING… AND BACK OFF STAGE?!

What Went Wrong at the Most Hyped Metal Farewell in History 🤘🖤

Picture this: Five million metalheads tuning in worldwide. Villa Park lit up like Valhalla with a light rig bigger than your nan’s Christmas tree. And the mighty Black Sabbath—yes, the full OG line-up (well, sorta)—back for one last apocalyptic hurrah. Or so we thought.

But instead of a thunderous two-hour send-off, we got… three songs per band. THREE. SONGS. 🧍‍♂️🧍‍♀️🧍
What’s occurring, mun?!

Let’s dive into what went wrong, the backstage chaos, and why Back to the Beginning didn’t quite go all the way.

🎤 THE HYPE: BLACK SABBATH’S METAL MIC DROP

This wasn’t just another gig. This was billed as the final, FINAL farewell for Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath—a full-circle moment back in their home city of Birmingham. 🤘
It was called Back to the Beginning because they were taking it back to where it all began, with Villa Park chosen for both symbolic and epic reasons.

Alongside Sabbath, we had:

  • Judas Priest (Rob Halford in full leather daddy glory)
  • Motorhead (with guest vocals and hologram Lemmy shenanigans)
  • Pantera (tribute-style with Zakk Wylde shredding like a demon)
  • Slash and Friends (doing metal medleys like it’s Download 2010 again)
  • And even Kelly and Sid Wilson announcing their engagement mid-gig?! 💍

It was meant to be metal Glasto, Bloodstock on steroids, the heaviest livestream in history. But then…

⚠️ THE SETLIST SHOCKER: WHY ONLY THREE SONGS?!

All the bands—even Sabbath—were limited to just three songs each. No extended solos, no stage banter, no crowd chants.
Fans were tamping. Here’s what may have caused the chaos:

💸 1. MONEY, MONEY, MONEY (AND NOT ENOUGH OF IT)

Let’s be honest: organising a multi-band mega-show with Ozzy-level production is stupidly expensive. Pyro, stages, livestream rights, holograms… the works.
Rumour has it, some bands were promised a cut of the livestream profits—but that pot wasn’t as deep as they thought.

According to backstage sources (aka Twitter/X), a major band dropped out last minute over payment disputes. Sharon Osbourne even hinted, saying:

“One manager wanted their slice of a pie that didn’t exist. So I cut them out of the whole bakery.”

Oof. Proper job, Shaz.

🕒 2. CURFEW CHAOS

Villa Park—bless it—ain’t exactly the wild west. It’s a football stadium in a residential area. That means strict noise curfews.
Word is the organisers had to squeeze 7+ bands into a 3.5-hour window, which led to brutal time cuts.

Three songs each. In. Out. No encores. No mercy.

⚡ 3. TECHNICAL GREMLINS 🧌

The opening 10 minutes of the livestream had lag, audio glitches, and one poor roadie nearly set himself on fire trying to fix a flamethrower that wouldn’t ignite during “Children of the Grave.”
Because of the tech delays, bands had their sets slashed live while they were on stage. Yep—ripped out of the setlist mid-solo.

You could almost see Zakk Wylde mouth,

“Is that it, then? Bloody hell.”

🧟 4. HEALTH AND SAFETY… AND OZZY’S HEALTH 😬

Let’s face it, Ozzy isn’t 25 anymore. The man’s been through more than most medieval knights. He was wheeled onstage, gave it his all, but he was visibly struggling by the second track.

He sang “Paranoid,” “War Pigs,” and “Iron Man” with the enthusiasm of a demon on decaf—but by the end, he looked knackered.

Sharon reportedly insisted on a shorter set for his safety, saying backstage:

“He’s the Prince of Darkness, not the Energizer Bunny.”

Fair enough, butt.

🧠 5. TOO MANY EGOS, NOT ENOUGH TIME

Let’s be real. When you’ve got Priest, Sabbath, Slash, and Pantera all sharing a stage, that’s a lot of legends, and even more egos.
Everyone wanted a big moment, a solo, a speech, a tribute… but with a ticking clock and a streaming schedule to stick to, it was all chopped to bits.

One insider said:

“It was like Glastonbury meets The Hunger Games. Every band was fighting for five extra minutes.”

🤯 THE FANS’ REACTION: A MIX OF LOVE AND “WHAT THE F***?!”

Metalheads don’t hold back. Socials exploded with everything from praise to pure fury:

  • “Ozzy is a god, but 3 songs? I was just getting the beers in!”
  • “5 million viewers and you give us a glorified sampler CD?”
  • “Still worth it. But gutted we didn’t get Heaven and Hell or N.I.B.”

Some even joked the gig was like a metal version of speed dating:

“Hi, I’m Lemmy! This is Ace of Spades! Gotta run!”

🧼 AFTERMATH: WAS IT WORTH IT?

Let’s not be too harsh. Despite all the chaos:

✅ We got to see Ozzy, Tony Iommi, and Geezer Butler together again
✅ The livestream didn’t crash after the first 10 minutes (a miracle in itself)
✅ The final crowd chant of “SABBATH! SABBATH!” echoed through Birmingham like a dragon’s roar

But was it the farewell we deserved? Nah.
Was it the most Sabbath thing ever? You bet your studded wristbands it was.

🔮 THE FUTURE: WILL WE EVER GET A DO-OVER?

Whispers are already swirling of a proper Sabbath send-off—in the studio or a smaller theatre run, with full control and fewer circus acts.
As Ozzy said in a post-gig interview:

“It wasn’t perfect. But it was honest. And that’s all Sabbath ever was.”

Cheers, Oz. We’ll raise a pint (or ten) to that. 🍻

🤘 THE FINAL VERDICT:

Back to the Beginning was a chaotic, undercooked, yet somehow iconic metal feast. It left us hungry, yes, but still grateful.

Next time, give Sabbath the whole damn stage—and let Ozzy howl into the void one more time.
