The Good, The Bad & The “What the actual hell is that smell?” edition

Welcome to Maid of Stone 2025 – where rock met reality and Friday kicked off with a proper bang… followed by a bit of a soggy whimper, then a thunderous riff to save the day. Here’s your Riff Report breakdown of the madness, mayhem, and mud (literal and metaphorical) from Day 1. Strap in, butt – it’s gonna be a bumpy ride 🤘

🎯 THE GOOD – “Tidy as a pint at the front barrier”

🔥 MASSIVE WAGONS TURN UP THE HEAT

They might’ve played early, but Massive Wagons brought arena-level energy to a mid-afternoon slot. Baz Mills was bouncing like a Duracell bunny on Buckfast, dragging the slowly growing crowd into his world of sweat, swagger and stadium riffs. “Bangin’ in Your Stereo”? Too right, mun. That tune slapped harder than your nan finding out you skipped Sunday dinner for a mosh pit.

🦅 FM – THE OLD GUARD STILL GOT IT

FM proved you don’t need to be loud to be lush. With smooth vocals and classy harmonies, it was like being serenaded by a gang of rock dads who know exactly how to make your spine tingle. Steve Overland’s voice is still smoother than melted Galaxy. Classy, catchy, and the kind of nostalgia that makes you text your ex while holding a plastic pint of warm cider.

👊 STONE BROKEN – BACK AND BRUTAL

After a rocky road (no pun intended), Stone Broken are back with a vengeance. They smashed through their set with fire in their belly and riffs thick enough to crack granite. “Worth Fighting For” hit differently live – like a rallying cry from a band that’s been through it and come out swinging. Welcome back, legends.

🎶 SOUND QUALITY ON POINT

Credit where it’s due – the main stage sound was chef’s kiss. Crystal clear, beefy bottom end, and enough volume to shake the loos (more on those later). You could hear every guitar solo, cymbal smash, and crowd scream. Sound team, you did us proud. Proper job! 🔊

😬 THE BAD – “Could’ve been lush… but ended up limp”

⏰ LATE START = GRUMPY CAMPERS

You know things are rocky when the first band is delayed because someone forgot to check the electric hookup distance. No power, no tunes, no loos. Punters who arrived early to set up and catch the first riff instead got… confusion, wandering staff, and zero signage. Want to find the festival entrance? Try divine intervention or Google Maps on 4% battery.

🚫 NO PORTALOOS WHERE THEY SHOULD BE

Campers were told they’d have private facilities… and what did they get? Nothing. Nada. Not even a bucket with a smiley face. For those with mobility issues or families, this was more than an inconvenience – it was a health hazard. We saw one poor lad desperately eyeing a hedge like it was a portal to salvation.

🌧️ WEATHER WOBBLES

Alright, we can’t blame the festival for the weather – but a lack of covered chill areas meant the brief showers turned the central walkway into the Somme. Slippy, muddy, and full of that particular festival smell: wet grass and regret.

💀 THE UGLY – “Oh dear. Someone call HR… and maybe Environmental Health.”

💩 TOILET ARMAGEDDON

Festival toilets are never glam, but Maid of Stone somehow managed to outdo every low bar. Overflowing within hours. No loo roll. Doors hanging off. At one point, someone emerged looking like they’d been in a Saw reboot. If Glastonbury has the “long drops,” Maid of Stone has the “short hope.” It was grim, butt.

🎟️ ACCESS CHAOS

We heard multiple reports of accessible ticket holders being left to fend for themselves – from being told there was no viewing platform ready, to companions being turned away due to staffing confusion. Accessibility is not optional, folks. It’s law. And it’s common bloody decency.

🗺️ SIGNAGE? WHAT SIGNAGE?

Trying to find your way around the site on Friday felt like being dropped in a hedge maze blindfolded. “Festival this way”? Not a single sign. The only useful directions came from a lad dressed as Slash shouting, “Just follow the sound of disappointment.” 😂

🤘 HONOURABLE MENTIONS

  • The merch tent had some cracking designs, including a t-shirt that said “I survived Maid of Sht 2025”* – someone get that printed ASAP.
  • Local vendors pulled through – big shoutout to the wood-fired pizza crew. £12 for a pizza? Still better value than the £7 pint of lukewarm lager.
  • Security staff stayed cheerful even as things went sideways. One steward offered his own umbrella to a little old rocker in a wheelchair. Legend.

💬 FAN QUOTES OF THE DAY

“I came for the riffs, stayed for the chaos. 10/10, would queue for a portaloo again.” – Gav, Maidstone

“If I wanted to queue this long for a wee, I’d go to a Beyoncé gig.” – Jenna, Kent

“The bands saved it. But next time, maybe let someone who’s been to a festival organise the festival?” – Dave, Tonbridge

🎤 FINAL VERDICT:

Friday Score: 6/10

Riffs? Tidy. Atmosphere? Mixed. Toilets? I was tamping.

Let’s hope Saturday sees fewer disasters and more devil horns. Until then, keep your wellies on and your expectations low 😅🤘
