DEF LEPPARD are heading to the big screen, with an officially authorised feature-length documentary titled Long Live Def Leppard set to arrive in cinemas in early 2027.

Get the popcorn ready.

And preferably make sure the cinema sound system goes all the way to eleven.

One of Britainโ€™s biggest rock exports is finally getting the full cinematic treatment, with Long Live Def Leppard promising an authorised journey through the extraordinary career of Joe Elliott, Rick Savage, Rick Allen, Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell.

For a band whose story contains global superstardom, tragedy, survival, enormous albums, changing musical fashions and more gigantic choruses than should legally fit inside one catalogue, there is no shortage of material.

Frankly, weโ€™re surprised somebody hasnโ€™t needed a three-part trilogy.

๐ŸŽธ From Sheffield To The World

DEF LEPPARDโ€™s story begins in Sheffield in the late 1970s, when a group of young musicians became part of the emerging movement that would become known as the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal.

But even during those early years, there was something slightly different happening.

DEF LEPPARD could riff with the best of them, but they also had a massive instinct for melody.

That combination eventually helped take them somewhere very few British hard-rock bands have ever reached.

Absolute global domination.

Early albums such as On Through The Night and High โ€™nโ€™ Dry built the foundation.

Then things went completely ridiculous.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Pyromania Changed Everything

Released in 1983, Pyromania transformed DEF LEPPARD into genuine international stars.

Produced by Robert John โ€œMuttโ€ Lange, the album delivered a polished but still muscular version of hard rock that sounded built for arenas.

Photograph.

Rock Of Ages.

Foolinโ€™.

Songs with enormous hooks, layered vocals and guitars designed to sound absolutely gigantic.

The record turned DEF LEPPARD into one of the biggest bands in America.

And somehow, their next album became even bigger.

๐Ÿ’ฅ Then Came Hysteria

If you wanted one album to explain DEF LEPPARDโ€™s scale, Hysteria would be a very good place to start.

Released in 1987, it became one of the defining rock records of the decade.

Pour Some Sugar On Me.

Animal.

Love Bites.

Armageddon It.

Rocket.

Hysteria.

Itโ€™s borderline rude how many massive singles are sitting on the same record.

The production was meticulous.

The harmonies were enormous.

The guitars were layered within an inch of their lives.

And suddenly DEF LEPPARD werenโ€™t simply successful.

They were one of the biggest rock bands on Earth.

๐Ÿฅ Rick Allenโ€™s Story Deserves The Big Screen On Its Own

Of course, the bandโ€™s history isnโ€™t simply a story of success.

In 1984, drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm following a devastating car accident.

For most drummers, that would have ended the career instantly.

Allen refused to accept that.

Working with a specially designed electronic and acoustic drum setup, he developed a new way of playing and eventually returned to the stage.

His comeback remains one of the most remarkable stories in rock history.

Not because it was some neat little inspirational montage.

It required physical recovery.

Mental resilience.

Technology.

Relearning an instrument he had already spent years mastering.

And the support of the band around him.

Seeing that chapter properly explored with archive footage and first-hand testimony could be one of the documentaryโ€™s most powerful moments.

๐Ÿ–ค Remembering Steve Clark

The story also carries enormous sadness through guitarist Steve Clark.

Clarkโ€™s playing and songwriting were fundamental to the classic DEF LEPPARD sound.

His partnership with Phil Collen gave the band a distinctive dual-guitar identity throughout their biggest period.

Clark died in 1991 at the age of just 30.

His loss devastated the band.

Yet DEF LEPPARD continued, releasing Adrenalize the following year before eventually bringing Vivian Campbell into the lineup.

Any serious documentary about the bandโ€™s history needs to give Clarkโ€™s contribution the space and respect it deserves.

Because he remains woven into those records forever.

๐ŸŽธ Vivian Campbell Helped Begin Another Era

Vivian Campbell joined DEF LEPPARD in 1992, already carrying serious pedigree after working with artists including Dio and Whitesnake.

Walking into a band after the loss of a beloved founding-era member is never straightforward.

But Campbell eventually became an integral part of DEF LEPPARD.

And remarkably, the lineup featuring Elliott, Savage, Allen, Collen and Campbell has now lasted for decades.

Rock bands are notoriously unstable organisms.

This lot somehow figured it out.

๐ŸŽค Joe Elliott Has Been The Voice Through It All

At the centre of the story remains Joe Elliott.

That unmistakable rasp has fronted the band from the club days through multi-platinum albums, enormous tours and stadium shows.

And while plenty of singers become inseparable from one particular era, Elliott has remained the constant voice of DEF LEPPARD across generations.

Whether heโ€™s belting out Rock Of Ages, Animal, Promises or Kick, thereโ€™s no mistaking who youโ€™re hearing.

The documentary should provide a fascinating chance to hear Elliott reflect on five decades that went far beyond anything a teenage rock band in Sheffield could have reasonably imagined.

๐Ÿ“ฝ๏ธ An Authorised Documentary Matters

The word โ€œauthorisedโ€ makes this project particularly interesting.

It suggests the filmmakers will have direct involvement from DEF LEPPARD themselves rather than relying entirely on outside commentary and archive footage.

That potentially means access.

Personal stories.

Unseen material.

Band archives.

Behind-the-scenes footage.

The sort of detail you usually donโ€™t get when somebody makes a documentary from the outside looking in.

And after nearly half a century together, there must be some absolutely incredible footage sitting in boxes somewhere.

Please tell us somebody labelled everything properly.

๐ŸŽถ Five Decades Of Rock History

DEF LEPPARDโ€™s longevity is remarkable when you consider how dramatically the musical landscape around them has changed.

Punk.

NWOBHM.

Hair metal.

Grunge.

Britpop.

Nu-metal.

Pop-punk.

Streaming.

Social media.

Rock repeatedly being declared dead every twelve minutes.

DEF LEPPARD just kept going.

Sometimes adapting.

Sometimes leaning into what they do best.

But always maintaining a huge international audience.

That survival story is every bit as interesting as the glory years.

๐ŸŒŽ Still Filling Massive Venues

And this isnโ€™t a documentary about a band that retired decades ago.

DEF LEPPARD remain a major touring force.

Their songs still fill stadiums.

Their catalogue continues reaching younger generations.

And collaborations and tours alongside other veteran giants have kept the band firmly visible in modern rock.

Thereโ€™s something particularly satisfying about a career-spanning film arriving while the musicians are still very much out there doing it.

This isnโ€™t an obituary.

Itโ€™s a celebration.

๐Ÿฟ Rock Documentaries Are Having A Moment

Thereโ€™s been a genuine resurgence in major music documentaries in recent years.

Fans clearly want more than simply streaming the records.

They want the stories.

The studio footage.

The arguments.

The tours.

The accidents.

The terrible fashion choices nobody is allowed to pretend didnโ€™t happen.

And DEF LEPPARD have one hell of a story.

If Long Live Def Leppard gets access to the right archive material and allows the band members to speak openly about the highs and lows, this could become essential viewing for rock fans.

๐Ÿค˜ THE RIFF REPORT VERDICT

An authorised DEF LEPPARD documentary feels massively overdue.

This is a band that went from Sheffield rehearsals to becoming one of the biggest rock acts on the planet.

They survived tragedy that could have ended everything.

They lost friends.

They rebuilt.

They adapted.

And then they kept filling huge venues for decades afterwards.

Thatโ€™s cinema material.

And with Long Live Def Leppard heading to theatres in early 2027, fans will finally get the chance to experience that journey on the big screen.

One request, cinemas:

Turn the sound system up properly.

Nobody wants to hear Pour Some Sugar On Me at polite volume.

Popcorn ready.

Leather jacket optional.

Air guitar absolutely mandatory.

Long live DEF LEPPARD indeed. ๐ŸŽฌ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿค˜
