Held in Viveiro in Galicia, Resurrection has grown from relatively humble beginnings into one of Europe’s most respected heavy-music festivals.
And what makes it particularly appealing?
The location.
Viveiro isn’t some giant industrial wasteland surrounded by motorway junctions.
It’s a beautiful coastal town in northern Spain.

And that’s dangerous.
Because you can tell yourself:
“We’re going to Barcelona for the culture.”

Rather than chasing every fashionable name, it celebrates rock ‘n’ roll history alongside cult acts and genuinely interesting discoveries.

Unless you’ve invented teleportation, you’re going to have to make some difficult decisions.
Then there’s barely time to wash the battle jacket before Mad Cool starts in Madrid on 8 July.
By August, you’ve convinced yourself another festival is perfectly reasonable.
So off to Leyendas del Rock you go.
By this point the hire car contains:

There is one extremely obvious advantage Spain has over British festival season.
THE WEATHER.
Now, obviously, extreme heat brings its own problems.
Sun protection matters.
Hydration matters.
Shade matters.
And standing outside in black jeans at 3pm in July can make you reconsider every fashion decision you’ve ever made.
But there’s something undeniably glorious about watching massive bands under blue skies.
Then there’s the food.
Spanish cities.
Beaches.
Historic locations.
Nightlife.
And festivals that frequently run later into the evening than British events.
You can turn practically any Spanish festival into a full holiday.
A few days exploring.
Festival weekend.
Couple of recovery days.
Flight home.
Then stare at the bank account and pretend everything is fine.

Don’t make the mistake of travelling to Spain and only watching international bands.
Spain has its own thriving rock and metal culture.
Festivals provide opportunities to discover Spanish heavy bands alongside international giants.
And that’s half the fun of travelling abroad for music.
Walk towards a stage because you hear something interesting.
Watch a band you’ve never encountered before.
Buy the shirt.
Follow them online.
Become irritatingly obsessed.
Then spend the next six months telling everyone:
