Beer. Bratwurst. Battle jackets. Enormous stages. Ridiculously efficient campsites. And enough heavy-metal festivals to destroy your annual leave allowance before August.
Welcome to GERMANY, MUN! ๐ฉ๐ช๐ฅ
If there is a spiritual homeland for European festival metalheads outside their own country, Germany has a very strong claim.
Germany doesnโt merely have rock and metal festivals.
Germany appears to collect them.
Youโve got the legendary Wacken Open Air. The twin monsters of Rock am Ring and Rock im Park. The beautiful surroundings of Rockharz. The enormous independent beast that is Summer Breeze. Reload bringing modern heaviness. Mโera Luna representing the dark alternative world.
And thatโs before weโve even started digging into the smaller underground gatherings.
So pack the battle jacket, locate your passport and prepare for The Riff Reportโs Ultimate Germany Rock & Metal Festival Calendar 2026. ๐ธ๐ฅ
๐ค๐ฅ Wacken Open Air
๐
Dates: 29 July โ 1 August 2026
๐ Location: Wacken, Schleswig-Holstein
๐ฅ Festival Size: Approximately 85,000 people
๐ต Music: Heavy Metal / Thrash / Death / Black / Power / Folk / Hard Rock
There are metal festivals.
There are legendary metal festivals.
And then there isโฆ
WACKEN.
Every year, the tiny village of Wacken transforms into one of the most famous heavy-metal gatherings on planet Earth.
Approximately 85,000 metalheads descend upon Schleswig-Holstein for several days of riffs, mud, beer, camping and absolute mayhem.
And 2026 is particularly special.
Itโs the 35th edition of Wacken Open Air.
The festival runs across four days from 29 July to 1 August 2026, with camping available from 26 July.
And because this is Wacken weโre talking about, the whole bloody thing is SOLD OUT.
Again.
More than 150 bands are confirmed across the four days, making this one gigantic celebration of practically every flavour of metal imaginable.
Classic metal?
Yep.
Death metal?
Obviously.
Black metal?
Of course.
Power metal?
Bring the dragons.
Folk metal?
Someoneโs already got a hurdy-gurdy.
Wacken isnโt simply somewhere you go to watch bands.
For metal fans, itโs a pilgrimage.

The Riff Report verdict: Every metalhead should experience Wacken at least once.
Preferably before their knees start making noises every time they stand up.
๐ธ๐ฅ Rock am Ring
๐
Dates: June 2026
๐ Location: Nรผrburgring, Nรผrburg
๐ฅ Festival Size: Approximately 90,000 people
๐ต Music: Rock / Metal / Alternative / Punk / Electronic
Rock am Ring is an absolute monster.
Held at the legendary Nรผrburgring, it has been one of Europeโs most important rock festivals for decades.
Weโre talking crowds approaching 90,000 people.
Thatโs not a festival.
Thatโs a reasonably sized town wearing black T-shirts.
Rock am Ring traditionally mixes enormous rock and metal names with punk, alternative and increasingly broad contemporary bookings.
The result is one of Germanyโs biggest annual music weekends.
And then thereโs the location.
Youโre watching massive bands at one of the worldโs most famous motorsport venues.
Cars normally make the noise around here.
For one weekend, enormous guitar amplifiers take over.

Big bands.
Big stages.
Big crowds.
Big German beers.
Sorted.
๐ช๐ธ Rock im Park
๐
Dates: June 2026
๐ Location: Zeppelinfeld, Nuremberg
๐ฅ Festival Size: Approximately 70,000 people
๐ต Music: Rock / Metal / Alternative / Punk / Electronic
Rock im Park is the sister festival to Rock am Ring.
Many of the same enormous artists travel between the two events over the weekend, meaning fans can choose which side of Germany they fancy invading.
And with approximately 70,000 festival-goers, Rock im Park isnโt exactly the little sibling.
Itโs massive.
The Nuremberg setting gives the event a slightly different character from Rock am Ring while maintaining the enormous line-ups and production associated with both festivals.

๐๏ธ๐ค Rockharz Open Air
๐
Dates: 1โ4 July 2026
๐ Location: Ballenstedt, Saxony-Anhalt
๐ฅ Festival Size: Approximately 25,000 people
๐ต Music: Heavy Metal / Power Metal / Folk Metal / Death Metal / Hard Rock
Now THIS is a festival location.
Rockharz takes place at the Ballenstedt airfield near the spectacular Teufelsmauer โ the Devilโs Wall rock formations.
Because apparently putting a metal festival in an ordinary field wasnโt dramatic enough.
More than 50 bands perform across four days on two open-air stages.
And hereโs the clever bit:
The stages are positioned next to one another and operate alternately.
That means dramatically fewer clashes.
No desperately sprinting across a festival site while hearing your favourite band start without you.
No negotiating a timetable like youโre planning a military operation.
You can actually watch the bands.
Revolutionary concept.
The 2026 festival runs from 1โ4 July.

Thatโs dangerously appealing.
๐ฌ๏ธ๐ Summer Breeze Open Air
๐
Dates: 12โ15 August 2026
๐ Location: Dinkelsbรผhl, Bavaria
๐ฅ Festival Size: Approximately 40,000 people
๐ต Music: Death Metal / Black Metal / Heavy Metal / Thrash / Metalcore / Hardcore
If Wacken is Germanyโs internationally famous metal pilgrimage, Summer Breeze is another gigantic reason to get yourself over there.
The festival proudly describes itself as Europeโs largest independent metal festival.
And the 2026 line-up is ridiculous.
Weโre talking:
HelloweenโจIn FlamesโจArch EnemyโจEisbrecherโจSaxonโจLamb of GodโจAirbourneโจAlestormโจThe Ghost InsideโจThy Art Is MurderโจHatebreedโจTestamentโจAmorphisโจSkindredโจOrbit CultureโจSoulflyโจParadise LostโจDeicideโจFit For An AutopsyโจNorthlaneโจAlien Ant FarmโจMushroomhead
โฆand loads more.
More than 125 bands are scheduled across the festival.
Weekend tickets for 2026 have sold out, although day tickets remain available.
And we can understand why.
That line-up looks like someone was given access to a metalheadโs Spotify account and told:
โJust book everyone.โ

โก๐ค Reload Festival
๐
Dates: 13โ15 August 2026
๐ Location: Sulingen, Lower Saxony
๐ฅ Festival Size: Approximately 20,000 people
๐ต Music: Metal / Hardcore / Metalcore / Punk / Hard Rock
Reload Festival sits beautifully in that middle ground between the enormous European giants and smaller boutique events.
Itโs still bloody big.
But it doesnโt require the population of Cardiff to fill the campsite.
Around 20,000 fans can descend upon Sulingen for a weekend particularly suited to anyone who likes modern metal, hardcore, punk and breakdowns capable of registering on local seismic equipment.
Reload has continued to grow while maintaining a strong community atmosphere.
Expect:
Circle pits.
Crowd surfers.
Breakdowns.
Massive riffs.
And at least one vocalist demanding:
โEVERYBODY GET DOWN!โ
before 20,000 people suddenly develop knee problems.

๐
Dates: 8โ9 August 2026
๐ Location: Hildesheim-Drispenstedt Airfield
๐ฅ Festival Size: Approximately 25,000 people
๐ต Music: Gothic / Industrial / Darkwave / Metal / Electronic / Dark Alternative
Right.
Someone turn the lights down.
Mโera Luna has arrived. ๐ค
This is one of Europeโs great gatherings for gothic and dark alternative culture.
Every year, Hildesheim becomes a sea of black clothing, spectacular outfits, industrial beats, gothic rock and dark metal.
And the 2026 line-up includes:
Within TemptationโจIn ExtremoโจWhite LiesโจThe Birthday MassacreโจFront Line AssemblyโจCombichristโจMegaherzโจHocicoโจSaltatio MortisโจOMDโจLacrimosaโจFloor JansenโจIAMXโจThe 69 EyesโจDie KruppsโจSKYNDโจClan of Xymox
โฆand plenty more.
The festival runs on 8 and 9 August 2026, with warm-up activity beginning beforehand.
Mโera Luna also offers much more than music, including readings, talks, markets, fashion and events connected to the wider gothic scene.

๐
Dates: June 2026
๐ Location: Scheeรel, Lower Saxony
๐ฅ Festival Size: Approximately 70,000โ80,000 people
๐ต Music: Rock / Alternative / Indie / Punk / Electronic
Hurricane is another of Germanyโs enormous multi-genre festival institutions.
The event takes place in Scheeรel and traditionally brings together major international rock, alternative, indie and electronic artists.
Itโs one of those festivals where the line-up can jump dramatically between genres.
Heavy band.
Indie band.
Electronic act.
Punk band.
Huge mainstream headliner.
Nobody knows whatโs coming next.
And thatโs part of the fun.

๐ Warm-Up: 18 June
๐ Location: Neuhausen ob Eck, Baden-Wรผrttemberg
๐ฅ Festival Size: Approximately 60,000 people
๐ต Music: Rock / Alternative / Indie / Punk / Electronic
Southside is Hurricaneโs southern sibling.
The festivals operate simultaneously with largely identical bills, with artists travelling between the two sites.
Which sounds logistically terrifying.
Thankfully, thatโs somebody elseโs problem.
Southside 2026 runs from 19โ21 June, with a warm-up on Thursday 18 June.
Approximately 150 acts are involved across the wider programme and multiple stages.
That makes Southside considerably broader than a dedicated rock or metal festival, but rock, punk and alternative music remain important parts of its identity.

August in Germany is basically:
Metal.
Thatโs the month.
๐ The Ultimate German Metal Festival Road Trip
This is where things get silly.
Start the summer with Rock am Ring or Rock im Park.
Recover.
Then hit Hurricane or Southside.
Recover again.
Head towards Ballenstedt for Rockharz.
By late July, itโs time for the pilgrimage:
WACKEN.
Spend four days worshipping at the altar of heavy metal.
Wash approximately six tonnes of mud from everything you own.
Then youโve barely got time to recover before August arrives.
Mโera Luna.
Summer Breeze.
Reload.
At this stage, you havenโt been home for several months and your car contains:
14 empty coffee cups.
Three questionable service-station sandwiches.
A sleeping bag that has developed its own ecosystem.
Seven festival wristbands.
Approximately 400 band shirts.
And one friend who keeps saying:
โMate, thereโs another festival next weekend.โ
Dangerous words.
๐บ๐ฉ๐ช Why Germany Is Festival Heaven
Germany gets so many things right when it comes to heavy music.
Thereโs an enormous audience.
Thereโs a deep metal culture.
Thereโs a huge touring circuit.
Thereโs excellent transport.
And there are festivals ranging from underground gatherings to events attracting close to 100,000 people.
You can watch massive international headliners one weekend and discover obscure European metal bands the next.
And German festival crowds?
They know their stuff.
This isnโt a crowd waiting around for one radio hit.
These people know the albums.
They know the riffs.
They know the B-sides.
Theyโve probably already bought the limited-edition vinyl.
Respect.
๐ค The Riff Report Saysโฆ

Want incredible scenery and fewer clashes?
Rockharz.
Want modern heaviness?
