What’s occurring in punk land? Well, it wouldn’t be a proper week without John Lydon – a.k.a. Johnny Rotten – spitting venom at the very band that made him famous. The latest rant? He’s branded talk of a Sex Pistols reunion as nothing more than “karaoke.” Brutal, but very on brand.
Rotten Refuses to Play the Game 🤬
Lydon has never been shy about his feelings on reunions, nostalgia, and the Pistols’ place in history. This time he’s doubled down, saying the fire and fury of 1977 can’t be recreated – and trying to do so just cheapens it.
“It’s not the Sex Pistols, it’s bloody karaoke. Punk wasn’t about cash-grabs or sing-along nostalgia – it was about ripping it all up.”
That’s a proper job of a takedown, mun.
The Clash of Attitudes ⚔️
While Steve Jones and Paul Cook have shown more willingness to dust off the old songs for a payday (and who can blame ‘em with those royalty splits?), Lydon’s stance hasn’t budged. To him, every attempt to resurrect the Pistols feels like dragging a corpse back onstage.
It’s not the first time he’s clashed with his ex-bandmates either – remember the whole Danny Boyle Pistol TV drama? Lydon slammed that too, claiming the others stitched him up by approving the series without his consent.
Punk or Panto? 🎭
Here’s the question though – would a Pistols gig in 2025 actually feel like a gig… or like your dad shouting Anarchy in the UK into the karaoke machine down Wetherspoons? 🍻
On one hand, the Pistols’ songs are timeless, raw and still slap harder than half the so-called punk bands flogging TikTok merch today. On the other, punk’s about spirit and rebellion, not nostalgia tours with overpriced pints and commemorative T-shirts.
Johnny Rotten: Still Rotten 🧷
Love him or loathe him, Lydon’s the living embodiment of never selling out (well, except for that butter advert, but let’s not go there 🤣). He’s loud, he’s stubborn, and he’s making damn sure the final word on the Pistols belongs to him.
And honestly? We wouldn’t have it any other way.
🤘 What do you reckon, butt? Would you still throw your Doc Martens in the pit for one last Pistols show, or is Lydon right to call time on the chaos?
