Disasters, drama, and duct tape miracles – only on The Riff Report 🤕🛠️🔥
Steelhouse isn’t just a festival – it’s a Wales-on-hard-mode simulator where the weather’s wild, the gear’s held together with hope, and anything that can go wrong… usually does. But somehow, every catastrophe turns into a legend, retold around the campfire with cider in hand and a tear in your eye (from laughter or trauma, hard to say).
🌩️ CHAPTER 1: THE GREAT TARP MASSACRE OF 2017
The wind. It came like a banshee from Blaenavon. One minute, the main bar marquee stood proud… the next?
💨 “It f**ing flew into the car park, butt!”* – eyewitness, pint in hand
Casualties:
- 12 tarpaulins (RIP)
- 47 tent pegs
- 1 gazebo that became a temporary kite
- The dignity of three crew members who chased it barefoot across the field
Moral of the story? No such thing as “too many guy ropes”.
🔥 CHAPTER 2: THE PYRO THAT WOKE THE SHEEP
During a particularly explosive set from a certain 80s rock act (naming no names but rhymes with “Raxon”), someone may have hit the pyro button a wee bit too early…
🔥 Result:
- Flames taller than the drum riser
- A bass player with singed eyebrows
- Three sheep legged it down the valley like they’d seen Lemmy’s ghost
The band’s reaction?
“Tidy bit of heat, that!” – and they kept playing.
🚽 CHAPTER 3: THE PORTALOO UPRISING OF 2015
Remember that stormy Friday? Yeah… so did the portaloos.
Wind + slope + questionable anchoring = portaloo bowling.
🎳 “We lost four of ‘em,” said Julie from Cleanup Crew, “One tipped, one rolled, one got wedged in the merch tent, and one… we still haven’t found.”
Someone crowd-surfed a loo door that year. True story.
⚡ CHAPTER 4: THE TIME THE STAGE LOST POWER MID-SOLO
Picture this: blazing sunset, band mid-shred, crowd going full Viking… then:
SILENCE.
DARKNESS.
PANIC.
The generator hiccupped. The sound died. And the only noise left was a very awkward cow mooing in the distance.
Cue the heroic crew sprinting in from every direction like Power Rangers with clipboards.
💡 Within 2 minutes, the lights came back. The band ripped into the next track.
Crowd? Chanted “Steel! House! Steel! House!” like it was a national anthem.
Crew? Sweating bullets and smiling. Because that’s the mountain way.
🧻 CHAPTER 5: TOILET PAPER SHORTAGE – THE 2022 BOGROLL BLITZ
You think a fuel shortage is scary? Try running out of bog roll at a Welsh mountain festival.
It started innocently:
“We’ve only got one box left for Saturday.”
Cue panic buying.
By Saturday afternoon:
- Toilet paper was being sold for beers
- People were guarding their stash like gold
- Someone tried to trade a wristband for a fresh roll
HERO OF THE WEEK?
Sarah from the merch tent, who had a full multipack in her car and became The Queen of Clean.
🎸 CHAPTER 6: THE BAND THAT GOT LOST ON THE MOUNTAIN
True story. A touring act missed the turn, followed Google Maps too far, and ended up in a farm field full of alpacas.
Quotes include:
- “Is this the backstage entrance?”
- “Why is that sheep staring at me?”
- “There’s no way our drummer can reverse this van.”
They still made it. 20 minutes late, covered in hay, and smelling of confusion. Set was killer.
🏕️ CHAPTER 7: TENTAGEDDON
Tent disasters are a Steelhouse rite of passage.
🎪 Greatest Hits:
- A full camping pod collapsed mid-nap, trapping a bloke like a sausage roll in cling film
- A gazebo launched into the sky and was never seen again
- Someone tried to pitch a tent on the slope facing the main stage – it slid three feet every hour until it was basically backstage
And of course:
“I woke up in the wrong tent. With the wrong dog. But the right crate of beer.” – Anonymous, Year 9
🧰 CHAPTER 8: THE FIX-IT MIRACLES
Despite the chaos, the crew always pull through. Some of their finest on-the-spot saves:
- Repaired a broken bass amp using a spoon and chewing gum
- Patched a hole in the beer tent roof with a Those Damn Crows t-shirt (sacrificed with honour)
- Used a broken snare drum stand to hold up the bar till (worked better than the original)
“We don’t panic. We improvise. And then we drink.” – Kev, stage crew, 12-year veteran
🥲 CHAPTER 9: LAUGHTER THROUGH THE MAYHEM
The best part of every disaster? The fans. You lot never let it kill the vibe.
- Cheering every tech fix like it’s a headliner
- Starting singalongs when the power cuts
- Offering beers to crew mid-storm
- Turning every soggy mishap into a story told for years
Steelhouse is resilience in a band tee, and every mishap is just fuel for the fire.
🏁 FINAL WORD: MOUNTAIN MAYHEM IS A FEATURE, NOT A BUG
Sure, other festivals have smooth operations, high-end toilets, and non-weaponised weather.
But where’s the fun in that?
At Steelhouse, we survive storms, laugh through loo catastrophes, and cheer when the tarps fly off because we know the best moments happen in the madness.
“If it all ran perfectly, we’d probably get bored.” – Every muddy legend who’s ever danced in the rain with chips in hand and a soggy bandana
