Because sometimes breaking up wasn’t the brave reinvention they thought it was. Sometimes it was just… a bit pants. Let’s dive in, c’mon!

1. Pantera

Split: 2003 (after Dimebag & Vinnie clashed with Phil Anselmo)
Post-Split Woes: Dimebag tragically murdered in 2004 💔
Phil got lost in supergroup chaos, and Vinnie Paul sulked into Hellyeah.
Reunion? Technically yes, but with Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante filling in. It’s more tribute than triumphant.
Verdict: Split cost them their legacy… and nearly their souls. 🕯️

2. Slayer

Split: 2019
Post-Split Woes: Tom Araya’s out living quietly, and Kerry King’s trying to revive the thrash flame with… erm… Kerry King.
Reunion? Announced in 2024! But fans are tamping that it happened so soon after their “final tour.”
Verdict: Turns out “The Final Tour” was just Slayer’s version of “One more pint, mun!” 🍻

3. Static-X

Split: 2010 (after Wayne Static and Tony Campos clashed over money and hair gel)
Post-Split Woes: Wayne tragically died in 2014, and the band tried to carry on with a mysterious masked frontman 🤡
Reunion? Sort of. It’s like Halloween meets nu-metal karaoke.
Verdict: Came back… but it’s more ghost than groove. 👻

4. Fear Factory

Split: So many times we lost count
Post-Split Woes: Endless lawsuits between Dino Cazares and Burton C. Bell
Reunion? Dino’s still touring with a new singer, but fans miss the OG industrial roar
Verdict: Fear Factory became Feud Factory. 🤖⚙️

5. Coal Chamber

Split: 2003, again in 2016
Post-Split Woes: Dez went full DevilDriver, but nu-metal fans never got closure
Reunion? Brief, but fizzled out like your mate’s vape pen in the pit
Verdict: Nu-metal’s spooky goth clowns never got their big second act. 🎭

6. Machine Head (Classic Lineup)

Split: 2018
Post-Split Woes: Robb Flynn tried to carry the torch, but fans still scream for Phil Demmel and Dave McClain
Reunion? Briefly teased. Didn’t last.
Verdict: The Blackening lineup split = the day the riffs died 🪦

7. Children of Bodom

Split: 2019
Post-Split Woes: Alexi Laiho died in 2020 😔 The rest of the band went quiet.
Reunion? None, out of respect.
Verdict: This one stings. Could’ve been legendary. 💔🎹

8. Sepultura (w/ Max Cavalera)

Split: Max left in 1996, Igor followed later
Post-Split Woes: Sepultura soldiered on, but lost that tribal thrash fury
Reunion? Max said “Nope!” many times, then formed Cavalera Conspiracy instead
Verdict: Sepultura became two halves that never equalled the whole. 🪘💥

9. Oasis of Metal – aka System of a Down

Split: Call it a pause after 2006
Post-Split Woes: Serj and Daron fought more than Liam and Noel. Only two new songs in 20 years!
Reunion? Tours, yes. Albums? Don’t hold your breath.
Verdict: Brilliant live, but creatively frozen like a Greggs sausage roll in a power cut. ❄️🥶

10. As I Lay Dying

Split: 2014 after Tim Lambesis tried to have his wife killed 😳
Post-Split Woes: Well… that. They reunited in 2018, but fans were split like a pit mid-breakdown
Reunion? Yep, but the stain remains
Verdict: You can come back from a bad album – not an attempted murder plot. ☠️

Honorable Mentions:

  • Morbid AngelWhat even was that techno album, mun?
  • Queensrÿche – Literally two versions of the band in court
  • Kittie – The metal sisterhood we want back full time
  • Twisted Sister – Split? Reunion? Who knows? They’re still arguing in leopard print

🎤 Final Riff:

Sometimes, bands break up and rise again like phoenixes. Other times, they crash harder than Lars trying to play double bass live 😅

Whether it’s ego, tragedy, or just terrible timing, one thing’s clear:

Splitting up is risky business, butt. And for these bands, it just didn’t hit the same.
