1. Varg Vikernes (Burzum / Mayhem)
Crime: Murder & Church Arson
Sentence: 21 years in a Norwegian prison
Letâs start with possibly the most infamous case in black metal history. Varg didnât just make haunting one-man atmospheric black metal â he murdered Mayhem guitarist Euronymous in 1993 and was convicted of arson on multiple churches. Norway doesnât mess about⊠but also doesnât do life sentences. He was released after serving 16 years, still controversial, still terrifying. â ïž
2. Tommy Lee (Mötley CrĂŒe)
Crime: Spousal Abuse
Sentence: 6 months in jail
The wildman of Mötley CrĂŒe wasnât just known for his outrageous on-stage drum kits and off-stage⊠ahem, tapes. In 1998, Tommy Lee was sentenced to 6 months in jail after assaulting then-wife Pamela Anderson. It was a sobering chapter in a chaotic life of excess, and one the CrĂŒe rarely talks about. đŹ
3. Tim Lambesis (As I Lay Dying)
Crime: Attempting to Hire a Hitman
Sentence: 6 years in prison
This one felt like a Lifetime movie. In 2013, Tim Lambesis was arrested for trying to hire a hitman to kill his estranged wife. The hitman turned out to be an undercover cop (rookie mistake, Tim). He served about 2.5 years before being released and returning to music â somehow. đ„Ž
4. GG Allin (The Murder Junkies)
Crime: Assault, Indecent Exposure, General Mayhem
Sentence: Multiple stints
Okay, okay, heâs more punk than metal, but GGâs chaotic gigs crossed genre lines â along with legal ones. He was jailed several times for assault, defecating on stage (yes, really), and attacking fans. GG wanted to die onstage. Instead, he overdosed offstage. A walking warning sign. đœđ§š
5. Paul DiâAnno (ex-Iron Maiden)
Crime: Fraud
Sentence: 9 months
The original voice of Iron Maiden ran into trouble decades later. In 2011, Paul was jailed after it was discovered heâd been claiming disability benefits while still performing gigs. The British government was not amused. DiâAnno served 9 months of a 9-month sentence â classic. âïžđŹđ§
6. Phil Rudd (AC/DC)
Crime: Drug Possession & Threatening to Kill
Sentence: 8 months home detention
AC/DCâs long-time drummer got into some real trouble in 2014, including charges of attempting to procure a murder (later dropped). But he still got slapped with home detention after pleading guilty to drug possession and making threats. âDirty Deeds,â indeed. đđ
7. Randy Blythe (Lamb of God)
Crime: Manslaughter (Acquitted)
Sentence: Detained for 5 weeks in Czech jail
In 2012, Randy was arrested in the Czech Republic after a fan died following a stage fall at a previous gig. Blythe was charged with manslaughter but eventually acquitted. Still, he spent over a month in a foreign jail, and the ordeal became a defining moment in his life â and music. đšđżâïž
8. Sid Vicious (Sex Pistols)
Crime: Suspected Murder
Sentence: Detained before death
Another punk crossover, but too metal not to include. Sid was arrested in 1978 for the suspected murder of girlfriend Nancy Spungen. He died of a heroin overdose before trial â a tragic punk icon with a fatal legacy. đ€
9. Axl Rose (Guns Nâ Roses)
Crime: Inciting a Riot (and more)
Sentence: Multiple arrests, short stints
From St. Louis riots to attacking airport security, Axl’s rap sheet is as wild as his stage antics. Though he never served long sentences, the GNR frontman was arrested numerous times in the ’80s and ’90s. If there was a trophy for “Most Likely to Brawl Mid-Tour,” itâd go to Axl. đ„đč
10. Ozzy Osbourne (Black Sabbath)
Crime: Public Urination (on the Alamo, no less)
Sentence: Brief jail + lifetime ban (briefly) from San Antonio
Oh Ozzy⊠In 1982, our Prince of Darkness urinated on a monument at the Alamo â while wearing a dress. He was arrested and temporarily banned from San Antonio. Rock bottom? Maybe. Legendary? Definitely. đ°đŠ
11. Jon Schaffer (Iced Earth)
Crime: Role in the U.S. Capitol Riot
Sentence: Still ongoing
Jon made headlines in 2021 as the only metal musician arrested for storming the U.S. Capitol on January 6th. He pleaded guilty to multiple charges and became a cooperating witness. Talk about a fall from riffing glory to political infamy. đșđžđš
