Today we’re raising a glass — preferably something rather tasty from California — to Kathy Rhoads D’Argenzio, who celebrated her birthday on 15 August! 🥳🍷

And for rock and metal fans, that surname Rhoads carries a pretty legendary amount of history.

Kathy is the sister of the late, phenomenal Randy Rhoads, the guitarist whose extraordinary work with Ozzy Osbourne helped redefine heavy metal guitar at the beginning of the 1980s.

But Kathy has also built a story of her own — one involving family, wine, California and keeping the Rhoads name and Randy’s incredible legacy close to heart.

🍷 Celebrating at D’Argenzio Wines

The birthday celebrations took place at D’Argenzio Wines in California, making it a suitably relaxed setting to raise a glass to Kathy.

D’Argenzio Wines is a family operation with Kathy and her husband Ray D’Argenzio closely associated with the winery and its Italian-American heritage.

Rock ‘n’ roll and wine?

That’s a combination we can absolutely get behind at The Riff Report. 🤘🍷

🎸 The Rhoads Family Legacy

Of course, Kathy will forever have a special connection to one of heavy metal’s most beloved musicians.

Her younger brother, Randy Rhoads, remains a genuine guitar icon.

After making his name with Quiet Riot, Randy joined Ozzy Osbourne’s new solo band and played an enormous role in establishing Ozzy’s post-Black Sabbath career.

His playing on albums including Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman became the stuff of heavy metal legend.

Tracks including Crazy Train, Mr. Crowley, Flying High Again and Over the Mountain continue to introduce new generations of musicians to Randy’s extraordinary playing.

His combination of classical influences, technical ability, melody and sheer bloody imagination made him different.

You don’t simply hear a Randy Rhoads solo.

You know it’s Randy.

His life was tragically cut short in a plane crash on 19 March 1982, when he was just 25 years old.

Yet more than four decades later, his influence remains absolutely enormous.

Walk into practically any guitar shop and mention Randy Rhoads and somebody will immediately have an opinion about that Crazy Train solo.

Probably followed by someone attempting to play it.

Possibly badly.

We’ve all been there. 😂🤘

❤️ Keeping Randy’s Memory Alive

For the Rhoads family, however, Randy wasn’t simply the legendary guitarist appearing on posters, T-shirts and magazine covers.

He was their brother and son.

Kathy, alongside other members of the Rhoads family, has helped ensure that Randy’s story continues to be remembered not only through his music but through the memories of the person behind that famous polka-dot Flying V.

That distinction matters.

Behind every rock legend is a human being whose family knew them long before the arenas, record deals and screaming crowds arrived.

And Randy’s story continues to inspire musicians around the world.
