It’s a sad day in the world of rock and metal, mun. The original Iron Maiden frontman, Paul Mario Day, has passed away aged 69. Known for fronting the band in its earliest days before Bruce Dickinson and Paul Di’Anno took the mic, Day also tore up stages with MORE and The Sweet.

Sweet guitarist Andy Scott confirmed the news, saying Paul passed away peacefully at his home in Newcastle, Australia, surrounded by family. A rock life, lived to the very end. 💔

From London East End to the Birth of a Beast 🦅🎸

Back in 1975, a young East End lad with serious vocal chops answered a call from Steve Harris. Together, they formed the first incarnation of Iron Maiden – a band name lifted from The Man in the Iron Mask and destined to become one of the biggest heavy metal forces in history.

Paul Mario Day wasn’t around for the Killers or Number of the Beast era – in fact, he was out before the band’s first official recordings – but he set the tone for what Maiden would become. Aggressive, melodic, and fearless. Without Paul, there’d be no blueprint for the band’s early sound. Proper job. 🏴

MORE Than a Footnote 🔥

After Maiden, Paul didn’t just fade into pub gig oblivion – no, butt, he kept the amps cranked. Joining MORE, he helped shape their sound during the NWOBHM explosion, playing alongside bands like Saxon and Def Leppard.

MORE were known for their hard-edged, no-nonsense metal and their 1981 debut Warhead remains a cult classic for headbangers who love it loud. Paul’s gritty yet powerful delivery was a perfect fit. 🤘

Sweet, but Still Heavy 🍬🥁

Later in his career, Paul took an unexpected but brilliant turn by stepping into the role of lead vocalist for The Sweet – yes, that glam rock juggernaut famous for Ballroom Blitz and Fox on the Run. It was a different flavour of rock ‘n’ roll, but Paul’s stage presence and voice proved he could handle glitter just as well as leather.

Fans who saw him live in this era will tell you – he brought that NWOBHM grit to those big glittery anthems, and it worked.

Tributes from the Rock World 🌹

Since news broke, tributes have poured in from fans and fellow musicians. Many have highlighted how Paul’s place in Iron Maiden history – though short-lived – was foundational. Others remember his later years with warmth, describing him as a kind, humble bloke who never forgot his roots.

Andy Scott’s statement summed it up perfectly:

“Paul was a unique voice and a great friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.”

The First Voice of the Beast 🏆

While Bruce Dickinson is the air raid siren and Paul Di’Anno is the street-level punk metal voice fans adore, Paul Mario Day was there before it all began. The first voice of the beast.

He might not have cut a record with Maiden, but his role in helping Steve Harris build the foundation of a band that would conquer the world can’t be ignored.

So tonight, wherever you are, raise a pint 🍺, stick on some early NWOBHM, and give a nod to the man who sang before Eddie even had a face.

Rest in peace, Paul Mario Day.
