Rock and metal have always flirted with danger – smashed guitars, trashed hotel rooms, lyrics that’d make your nan faint – but some artists took things a step further and ended up doing time in the slammer. Whether it was wild antics gone wrong, substance-fuelled chaos, or full-blown criminal charges, these metalheads swapped backstage for the big house… at least temporarily.

So, buckle up, butt – here’s our list of 11 metal musicians who faced the judge and did some time. And no, “Jailhouse Rock” wasn’t on the playlist. 👮‍♂️🎸

1. Varg Vikernes (Burzum / Mayhem)

📍Crime: Murder & Church Arson
⛓️ Sentence: 21 years in Norwegian prison
Talk about infamous. Varg stabbed fellow Mayhem guitarist Euronymous to death in 1993 and also torched multiple churches. He served 16 years and became the controversial poster boy for black metal criminality. Dark doesn’t even begin to cover it. 🖤🔥

2. Tommy Lee (Mötley Crüe)

📍Crime: Domestic violence
⛓️ Sentence: 6 months
The Crüe drummer’s wild lifestyle finally caught up with him in 1998 when he was jailed for assaulting then-wife Pamela Anderson. This was peak tabloid chaos – and even for Mötley, that’s saying something. 🙄💥

3. Tim Lambesis (As I Lay Dying)

📍Crime: Soliciting a hitman
⛓️ Sentence: 6 years
Yep, he literally tried to hire someone to kill his wife. Spoiler: it was an undercover cop. Arrested in 2013, served about half his sentence, and somehow returned to music. “Metalcore murder plot” is not something you see every day. 😳🖤

4. GG Allin (Solo / The Jabbers)

📍Crime: Assault, indecent exposure, and all-around mayhem
⛓️ Sentence: Multiple stints
A punk-metal crossover madman, GG Allin lived in jail almost as much as he did on stage. Fighting fans, throwing… stuff, and self-harm onstage meant the police were basically on speed dial. The bloke made Sid Vicious look well-adjusted. 🤮🚨

5. Paul Di’Anno (ex-Iron Maiden)

📍Crime: Benefit fraud
⛓️ Sentence: 9 months
The original Maiden vocalist claimed disability benefits while still performing shows. Not very “Run to the Hills,” more like “Run from the DSS.” The court wasn’t impressed, and he spent most of 2011 inside. 🤦‍♂️📉

6. Phil Rudd (AC/DC)

📍Crime: Drug possession, threatening to kill
⛓️ Sentence: 8 months home detention
The Aussie stick-smasher got into hot water in 2014 for threatening a former employee and possession of meth and cannabis. Not quite “High Voltage”… more like high and volatile. ⚡🥴

7. Randy Blythe (Lamb of God)

📍Crime: Manslaughter (later acquitted)
⛓️ Sentence: Detained in Czech prison (over a month)
After a tragic stage incident in Prague led to a fan’s death, Blythe was arrested and jailed in 2012. He was eventually acquitted, but the saga was a stark reminder of how wild shows can carry real consequences. 🏛️😔

8. Wes Scantlin (Puddle of Mudd)

📍Crime: Multiple offences – DUI, drug possession, vandalism
⛓️ Sentence: Multiple arrests, jail time
Okay, not quite metal – more “muddy rock” – but Wes deserves a spot here for sheer consistency. His rap sheet includes driving through airport barriers and trashing his own house. The court system probably had him on speed dial. 🚔💀

9. Nicholas Barker (ex-Cradle of Filth / Dimmu Borgir)

📍Crime: Assault
⛓️ Sentence: Time served after arrest in the early 2000s
Not as headline-grabbing as some, but the UK drummer saw time behind bars for an assault charge, leading to tour disruptions and lineup shakeups. Gothy rage is still rage, mun. 🕷️👊

10. Axl Rose (Guns N’ Roses)

📍Crime: Assault and inciting a riot
