Oi, metalheads! Strap in, because we’re about to summon the gods of distortion, thunder, and chaos. 🎸
This ain’t no Rolling Stone fluff list or AI-generated clickbait — this is The Riff Report’s unholy gospel of the greatest metal musicians to ever shred, scream, and slam their way into our skulls.
These legends forged the riffs, built the stages, and left trails of sweat, blood, and broken snare heads across decades of gigs. From NWOBHM to nu-metal, from church-burning black metal to arena-filling thrash, these 12 titans defined the genre.
Let the debate (and headbanging) begin… 🖤
🎤 1. RONNIE JAMES DIO – THE VOICE OF METAL
(Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio)
The pint-sized powerhouse with a voice like a dragon in opera school. Dio didn’t just sing metal — he was metal. Whether summoning rainbows in the dark or leading Sabbath through their rebirth, he had lungs of steel and lyrics filled with swords, stars, and shadows.
He literally popularised the 🤘 devil horns — every time you throw them up, you’re throwing love to Ronnie.
Essential Listen: Holy Diver (1983)
Riff Report Rating: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
🎸 2. TONY IOMMI – THE RIFF-FORGING FATHER OF DOOM
(Black Sabbath)
Let’s be honest: no Iommi, no metal. The godfather of heavy music invented the genre by accident after losing his fingertips in a factory mishap. Instead of giving up, he down-tuned his guitar — and thus, the sound of doom was born.
His riffs are tectonic plates crashing together.
Essential Listen: Children of the Grave
Riff Report Rating: 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
🥁 3. LARS ULRICH – THE MOST FAMOUS DRUMMER IN METAL (FOR BETTER OR WORSE)
(Metallica)
Yes, yes, we know… some of you hate him. But c’mon. Lars was the architect of thrash metal’s biggest empire and the guy who helped bring metal to the masses.
He’s responsible for some of the most iconic beats in metal history — and some of the most infuriating fills too.
Essential Listen: One
Riff Report Rating: 🥁🥁🥁🥁 (with an extra bonus YEAH)
🎸 4. DIMEBAG DARRELL – RIFF COWBOY, LEGEND FOREVER
(Pantera, Damageplan)
Dime didn’t just play guitar — he painted chaos with it. Whether laying down filthy Southern groove or screeching dive bombs, his playing was untamed brilliance.
He made squeals cool and solos dangerous again. Shot onstage in 2004, his loss still rips through the metal world.
Essential Listen: Floods
Riff Report Rating: 🔫🎸🔥🔥🔥
🎤 5. BRUCE DICKINSON – IRON MAIDEN’S AERIAL ASSAULT
(Iron Maiden)
The voice that could level castles. Bruce is a human jet engine, known for holding insane high notes and actually flying the band’s tour plane.
If you’ve never screamed “RUN TO THE HILLS!” at the top of your lungs, are you even metal?
Essential Listen: Hallowed Be Thy Name
Riff Report Rating: ✈️🎤🔥🔥🔥
🥁 6. DAVE LOMBARDO – THE WAR DRUMMER OF THRASH
(Slayer, Testament, Suicidal Tendencies)
The beast behind Slayer’s brutality. His double bass work on Reign in Blood alone earns him a seat at this table of gods.
Watching Lombardo live is like watching an octopus possessed by Satan.
Essential Listen: Angel of Death
Riff Report Rating: 💀🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
🎸 7. JAMES HETFIELD – THE DOWNPICK KING
(Metallica)
Papa Het is rhythm guitar. His right hand could crack the Earth’s crust. Every iconic riff from Metallica’s golden age — that’s him.
Plus, his “YEEEAH!” is basically a mating call for metal fans.
Essential Listen: Master of Puppets
Riff Report Rating: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 and a TABLE YEAHHH
🎸 8. RANDY RHOADS – THE CLASSICAL SHREDDER
(Ozzy Osbourne)
Randy fused Bach and mayhem. His leads on Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman are like operas conducted by demons.
Gone far too soon, but his solos still echo across every fretboard.
Essential Listen: Mr. Crowley
Riff Report Rating: 🎻🎸💀💫💫
🥁 9. JOEY JORDISON – SLIPKNOT’S STICK-WIELDING DEMON
(Slipknot, Murderdolls, Sinsaenum)
Behind the mask and corpse paint was Joey, an absolute machine.
His 360° drum kits, hyper-speed fills, and blast beats brought extreme metal into arenas.
Essential Listen: People = Sht*
Riff Report Rating: 🔥🥁🥁🥁🥁🪦
🎸 10. STEVE HARRIS – THE BASS THAT LAUNCHED A THOUSAND RUNS
(Iron Maiden)
No bassist gallops quite like Harris. He’s the engine behind Maiden’s epics and the proudest football fan in metal.
Also: writes half their catalogue. A riff-writing machine with a four-string sword.
Essential Listen: The Trooper
Riff Report Rating: ⚔️🏴☠️🔥🔥🔥
🎤 11. ROB HALFORD – THE METAL GOD
(Judas Priest)
Leather, studs, and skyscraper vocals. Halford screams like angels in a blender and rides Harleys onstage.
He paved the way for operatic vocals, metal fashion, and LGBTQ+ representation in rock.
Essential Listen: Painkiller
Riff Report Rating: 🏳️🌈🏍️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
🎸 12. TOM MORELLO – THE NOISE MAKER
(Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave)
Morello turned guitar solos into sonic anarchy. Scratchy DJ sounds? Allen keys mid-solo? Yeah, he did all that and still made it heavy.
He’s the sound of revolution strapped to a wah pedal.
Essential Listen: Bulls on Parade
Riff Report Rating: 🚨🎛️🔥🔥🔥🔥
🤘 HONOURABLE MENTIONS (Because This List Was a Bloodbath):
- Cliff Burton – Metallica’s lost low-end sorcerer
- Vinnie Paul – Groove thunder god (Pantera)
- Angela Gossow – Growl queen of melodic death metal
- Kerry King – Slayer’s chrome-dome riff master
- Lemmy – Rock ‘n’ roll outlaw, even if you argue Motörhead isn’t metal (you’re wrong)
🤯 FINAL THOUGHTS FROM THE PIT
Could we have added Tom Araya? Geezer Butler? Corey Taylor? Absolutely. But this ain’t no charity list. These 12 earned their spots by melting ears and shaking souls.
Agree? Disagree? Wanna start a friendly mosh pit over it?

And remember:
If it ain’t loud, it ain’t worth it. 🎤🔥
If it ain’t rude, it ain’t rock.
If it ain’t metal… well, we probably left it in the bin with Nickelback.
Diolch for reading, you beautiful riff gremlins. Now go crank that amp and annoy the neighbours.
