โLearn your ABCs, ya filthy animal!โ
๐ ฐ A is for Axe
Not the smelly body spray โ this is the term for your trusty six-string weapon. Whether itโs a Les Paul or a battered Strat covered in stickers and beer stains, an axe is what separates the posers from the players. ๐ธ๐ช
๐ ฑ B is for Breakdown
When the song slows down, the chugs kick in, and the pit becomes a battlefield. Absolute carnage. If youโve never caught a Doc Marten to the face during a breakdown… did you even live? ๐๐ฅ
๐ ฒ C is for Crowd Surfing
Like being carried on a throne made of human arms. Until someone drops you. Or steals your shoe. Or your phone. Or your soul. ๐๐ค
๐ ณ D is for Devil Horns
Raise ’em high! ๐ค The international salute for โthis riff is filthier than a Wetherspoons toilet.โ Ronnie James Dio made it famous โ the rest of us just abuse it daily. ๐๐ฅ
๐ ด E is for Encore
The part of the show where the band pretends to leave, we scream like banshees, and they magically appear for three more songs and a drum solo. Classic. ๐ค๐
๐ ต F is for Feedback
That high-pitched screech that makes your dog cry and your fillings loosen. And we love it. Pure, chaotic electricity. โก๐
๐ ถ G is for Growl
Vocals that sound like the Cookie Monster summoned Satan. Grrrraaaaaarghhh!! ๐ฆ๐๏ธ
Parents hate it. We worship it.
๐ ท H is for Headbanging
Donโt skip neck day, kids. Whether itโs the classic up-and-down or full-body whiplash, headbanging is the metalhead mating dance. And yes, it hurts. Worth it. ๐คฏ๐ง
๐ ธ I is for Intro Riff
If your opening riff doesnโt melt faces in under 5 seconds, throw the whole song away. Weโre looking at you, โEnter Sandman.โ ๐๏ธโซ
๐ น J is for Jump Da F* Up**
As barked by Jonathan Davis during Koะฏnโs live rituals. When he tells you to jump, you jump. If you donโt, the pit will make you. ๐พ๐บ
๐ บ K is for Kick Drum
BOOM BOOM TCH. The heartbeat of metal. If it feels like a steam train hitting your chest, congratulations โ the sound engineer is doing their job. ๐๐ฅ
๐ ป L is for Leather
Jackets, trousers, wrist cuffs, probably even undies (donโt ask). Leather is rockโs second skin. Hot in the summer, hotter in the mosh pit. ๐งฅ๐ฅ
๐ ผ M is for Mosh Pit
A swirling tornado of limbs, rage, and sweat. Itโs violent ballet. If someone falls, you pick ’em up โ then elbow them in the ribs. Brotherhood. ๐๐ฉธ
๐ ฝ N is for Neck Brace
The natural result of 2 hours of headbanging + 3 pints + being 34 years old. Bang responsibly, mun. ๐ฆด๐ต
๐ พ O is for Open Air
Sunburn, beer, and riffs under the sky. Festivals are our church, and the open air is the altar. Bonus points for mud. ๐ค๏ธ๐บ
๐ ฟ P is for Power Chord
Two fingers. Infinite noise. The riffmasterโs secret weapon. Just donโt let your GCSE music teacher catch you. ๐ธ๐
๐ Q is for Quest
Because letโs be honest, 80% of power metal songs are just Dungeons & Dragons with extra decibels. ๐งโโ๏ธ๐ก๏ธ
โWe ride… to the kingdom of Zargothrax!โ
๐ R is for Riff
The spine of every great rock song. Riffs are the reason we exist. If youโre not air guitaring by the third bar, itโs not worth your time. ๐ถ๐ถ๏ธ
๐ S is for Shred
Guitar playing so fast it violates traffic laws. Bonus points for playing behind your head, with your teeth, or whilst on fire. ๐ฅ๐ธ
๐ T is for Tinnitus
That little ringing in your ear that whispers, โRemember Slayer last summer?โ Wear earplugs. Or donโt. Just never complain. ๐งโโ๏ธ๐
๐ U is for Unplugged
Time to light candles, get emotional, and pretend your acoustic version of โMaster of Puppetsโ is just as hard. ๐ฏ๏ธ๐ช
๐ V is for Volume
ONE LOUDER. If your neighbours arenโt crying, itโs not loud enough. ๐งจ๐
โIs it safe?โ โ No. But itโs metal.
๐ W is for Wall of Death
A biblical split of the crowd, followed by full-speed collision. If you survive, you win respect. And maybe a cracked rib. ๐งฑโ ๏ธ
๐ X is for XXXL Band Tee
Standard festival attire. Covers your knees. Doubles as a tent. Bonus if itโs black and smells faintly of 2006. ๐๐ค
๐ Y is for Yelling
Whether itโs โSLAAAYEERRR!โ or โPLAY FREEBIRD!โ, yelling is part of the gig.
Warning: once you start, youโll never stop. ๐ข๐ป
๐ Z is for Zakk Wylde
Bearded legend. Pinch harmonic king. Makes his guitar cry, scream, and punch holes in the sky. All hail the Viking shredlord! ๐งโ๏ธ๐ธ
๐ค Now You Know Your ABCsโฆ
Next time someone calls metalheads uneducated, show ’em this list and scream โEDUCATION THROUGH RIFFS, MUN!โ ๐ด
Which letter was your favourite? Did we miss one? Should โO is for Ozzyโ be a thing? Tell us in the comments or shout it from the back of the pit! ๐ฌ๐ฆ
Want this printed on a t-shirt, tattooed on a leg, or shouted through a megaphone at Download Festival?
We support all life choices. ๐ค๐

โProper job, rockers. Diolch!โ ๐ค
Michael is the founder, editor, and chief riff wrangler behind The Riff Report, an independent Welsh rock and metal publication built by fans, for fans. With a lifelong passion for loud guitars, unforgettable live shows, and the incredible community that surrounds rock and metal, he created The Riff Report to celebrate everything that makes the scene specialโfrom legendary headline acts and grassroots venues to rising bands that deserve to be heard.
A familiar face at festivals across the UK, Michael spends much of the year covering events including Download Festival, Bloodstock Open Air, Steelhouse Festival, Firevolt, Plumpton Revival, and many more. Whether heโs battling the Welsh weather on a mountainside, surviving a weekend in a muddy campsite, or squeezed against the front barrier with thousands of fellow fans, heโs always searching for the next great story to share.
As editor of The Riff Report, Michael writes festival guides, breaking news, album reviews, gig reviews, interviews, opinion pieces, nostalgia features, and behind-the-scenes stories from across the rock and metal world. His writing combines honest opinions, humour, and a genuine love for live music, bringing readers closer to the bands, festivals, venues, and people that keep the scene alive.
Michael is particularly passionate about supporting independent artists, local venues, charities, and the wider UK rock and metal community. He believes every band deserves a chance to be discovered and every festival has a story worth telling. Through The Riff Report, he aims to shine a spotlight on both the biggest names in rock and the future stars waiting to break through.
When heโs not writing or interviewing artists, youโll probably find him exploring festival campsites, photographing live shows, chatting with fellow fans over a pint, or planning the next road trip in search of more riffs, bigger crowds, and unforgettable moments.
Above all, Michael believes rock and metal are about more than musicโtheyโre about community, friendship, and creating memories that last a lifetime. Thatโs exactly what The Riff Report exists to celebrate.
Proudly Welsh. Proudly Loud. Always chasing the next great riff. ๐ค
