By The Riff Report – Turn your brain off, your amp to 11, and prepare for stupidity of biblical proportions 😈
🎬 What’s Occurring?
There are documentaries.
There are comedies.
And then there’s Spinal Tap – the film that did both so well, half the people watching thought it was real. 🤯
Directed by Rob Reiner (as clueless filmmaker Marty DiBergi), This Is Spinal Tap follows the rise, fall, and slight rise again of Spinal Tap, Britain’s most accident-prone rock band since Keith Moon tried to flush fireworks down a hotel toilet. 🧨🚽
It’s the OG rock mockumentary, and every band since has felt the sting of its truth disguised as farce.
🎸 Meet the Band:
- David St. Hubbins – the mullet-blessed lead singer who talks like he’s swallowed a thesaurus and a dodgy philosophy book
- Nigel Tufnel – guitarist, amplifier obsessive, and probably one strong breeze away from total collapse
- Derek Smalls – “lukewarm water” bassist and man who once got trapped in a giant plastic pod on stage
- Plus a drummer rotation faster than a dodgy kebab – they all explode. Literally. 💥🥁
🤘 The Vibes: Rock Excess vs. Brain Deficiency
- 🎚️ “These go to 11.” – The most legendary knob joke in music history
- ⚰️ A miniature Stonehenge descends on stage. It is 18 inches tall.
- 💔 Inter-band tension over a girlfriend taking over management? Check.
- 🗺️ Getting lost backstage on the way to the stage? “HELLO CLEVELAND!” 🚪➡️🚪➡️🚪
- ☠️ Drummers that keep dying under mysterious (and increasingly stupid) circumstances
It’s like The Office got drunk on whisky, strapped on leather trousers, and started covering Deep Purple.
🎶 Soundtrack So Good You’ll Forget It’s Fake
Spinal Tap’s songs are ACTUALLY GOOD.
From the thumping Big Bottom (an ode to large posteriors with every bass player on stage) to the absolute anthem Tonight I’m Gonna Rock You Tonight, they sound like legit 80s glam/hard rock bangers… because they are.
But with lyrics so daft they make Steel Panther look subtle.
“My baby fits me like a flesh tuxedo, I’d like to sink her with my pink torpedo.”
Shakespeare could never. 😂
🧠 The Genius Behind the Goofiness
Yeah, it’s silly. But it’s also razor sharp.
Spinal Tap is a savage roast of every bloated, egomaniacal rock band that ever thought they were God’s gift because they sold out Madison Square Garden in 1977.
Every cringey band decision, every nonsensical album cover, every awkward interview moment – it’s all here, dialled up to… well, 11. 🔊
And the best part? It’s mostly improvised. The cast (Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer) just became these guys. That’s why it feels so painfully real – because it is.
🎤 Why It Still Slaps in 2025
- Every band has a “Stonehenge” moment
- Every gig has a “Hello Cleveland” lost backstage panic
- Every frontman has thought, “Am I too artistic for this world?” while wearing a leopard print codpiece
This isn’t just a comedy – it’s a blueprint. Every rock doc since owes it a pint. From Anvil!, to Some Kind of Monster, to your mate’s tragic YouTube vlog, they all walk in Spinal Tap’s platform boots.
🛑 Any Bits That Don’t Age Well?
It’s very white, very male, and very 80s. So yeah, a few eyebrow-raising moments in there. But nothing malicious – it’s mocking the absurdity, not celebrating it.
🎤 Final Riff
This Is Spinal Tap isn’t just a film – it’s a rite of passage.
If you’ve ever been in a band, wanted to be in a band, or been in the crowd for a band that clearly took itself too seriously, you NEED this in your life.
It’s dumb, it’s sharp, it’s full of classic quotes and even classier mullets.
And remember: There’s a fine line between stupid and clever.
🤘 Riff Report Rating:
11/10 Broken Knobs 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
+1 bonus point if you’ve ever drawn your band logo on your schoolbooks and called it “metal.”

A familiar face at festivals across the UK, Michael spends much of the year covering events including Download Festival, Bloodstock Open Air, Steelhouse Festival, Firevolt, Plumpton Revival, and many more. Whether he’s battling the Welsh weather on a mountainside, surviving a weekend in a muddy campsite, or squeezed against the front barrier with thousands of fellow fans, he’s always searching for the next great story to share.
As editor of The Riff Report, Michael writes festival guides, breaking news, album reviews, gig reviews, interviews, opinion pieces, nostalgia features, and behind-the-scenes stories from across the rock and metal world. His writing combines honest opinions, humour, and a genuine love for live music, bringing readers closer to the bands, festivals, venues, and people that keep the scene alive.
Michael is particularly passionate about supporting independent artists, local venues, charities, and the wider UK rock and metal community. He believes every band deserves a chance to be discovered and every festival has a story worth telling. Through The Riff Report, he aims to shine a spotlight on both the biggest names in rock and the future stars waiting to break through.
When he’s not writing or interviewing artists, you’ll probably find him exploring festival campsites, photographing live shows, chatting with fellow fans over a pint, or planning the next road trip in search of more riffs, bigger crowds, and unforgettable moments.
Above all, Michael believes rock and metal are about more than music—they’re about community, friendship, and creating memories that last a lifetime. That’s exactly what The Riff Report exists to celebrate.
