The prog-rock world has lost one of its greats. Rick Davies – the keyboard wizard, smoky-voiced singer, and co-founder of Supertramp – has passed away at the age of 81.
Best known for steering the band through the 1970s and early ’80s, Davies co-wrote some of Supertramp’s biggest hits including “Goodbye Stranger,” “Bloody Well Right,” and “Breakfast in America.” His distinctive low vocals and masterful keys were the perfect counterbalance to Roger Hodgson’s higher-pitched tones, making Supertramp’s sound instantly recognisable and utterly timeless.
Formed in 1969, Supertramp went on to sell more than 60 million albums worldwide, with Breakfast in America becoming one of the most iconic prog-pop crossover albums of all time. Davies wasn’t just a frontman – he was the band’s heartbeat, keeping the group going through lineup changes and decades of touring.
Fans and fellow musicians have already begun flooding social media with tributes, praising Davies’ unique songwriting, stage presence, and influence on generations of players.
It’s another tough day for classic rock fans, mun. Raise a glass, spin Crime of the Century at full blast, and let Rick’s grooves fill the air one more time. 🎶
Diolch for the music, Rick. You bloody well got it right. 🖤

Above all, Michael believes rock and metal are about more than music—they’re about community, friendship, and creating memories that last a lifetime. That’s exactly what The Riff Report exists to celebrate.
