š° Before the Amplifiers
Long before walls of Marshall stacks appeared, Knebworth House had already enjoyed centuries of history.
Dating back to the 15th century and transformed into its striking Gothic appearance during the Victorian era, the estate has been home to the Lytton family for generations.
Its huge parkland offered the perfect setting for large public events, although nobody could have predicted that it would eventually become Britainās answer to Woodstock.
Today, visitors still tour the historic house and gardens, but for music lovers, itās the fields that hold the real magic.
šø 1974 ā The Birth of Knebworth Festival
Everything changed on 20 July 1974.
Legendary concert promoter Freddie Bannister launched what would become the Knebworth Festival, bringing together some of the finest musicians in the world for a huge one-day event.
Unlike camping festivals such as Glastonbury, Knebworth focused on massive standalone concerts featuring world-class artists.

Already a legendary songwriter, Van Morrison brought a soulful, emotional performance packed with classics including Brown Eyed Girl, Moondance, and Domino.

š 1975 ā Pink Floyd Push the Boundaries
Pink Floyd didnāt simply perform.
They created an experience.
Touring around the era of Wish You Were Here and following the phenomenal success of The Dark Side of the Moon, the band introduced audiences to one of the most spectacular outdoor productions ever seen.
Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason filled the night sky with lasers, projections, giant circular screens and immersive sound.
Many concert-goers still describe it as decades ahead of its time.
š 1976 ā The Rolling Stones Turn Knebworth Into Britainās Biggest Party
When Mick Jagger and company rolled into Knebworth, they were already recognised as the biggest rock band in the world.
Fresh from the release of Black and Blue, The Rolling Stones delivered a swagger-filled set featuring timeless classics:

Genesis arrived during one of the biggest transitions in rock history.
Phil Collins had successfully taken over vocal duties following Peter Gabrielās departure, and the band were evolving into arena superstars.
Their performance balanced progressive masterpieces with newer radio favourites, supported by a spectacular light show that hinted at the stadium productions to come.

If there was one concert every rock fan wanted to attend, this was it.
After several years away from touring, Led Zeppelin returned for two enormous performances in August 1979.
More than 200,000 fans travelled from across Europe.

The Beach Boys transformed the estate into Britainās biggest beach party.

More than 120,000 fans gathered for Queenās Magic Tour finale.
