We all love a good metal festival. The riffs. The pits. The questionable food that tastes better than a Michelin-starred meal because you’ve been drinking since 10am.

But let’s be honest, there are some things that make even the most die-hard headbanger scream: “I was tamping, mun!” Here’s The Riff Report’s definitive list of festival nightmares that could make even Lemmy raise an eyebrow.

🎪 1. The Eternal Queue of Doom

You thought you were going to see that band you’ve been waiting months for? Nah, you’re spending your afternoon staring at the back of someone’s faded battle jacket. You’ve now memorised every patch — including the one that says “Fudge Tunnel” — and you still haven’t moved more than three feet.
By the time you actually reach the bar, your beer costs £8.50 and the headliner’s halfway through their encore.

🚽 2. The Portaloo Apocalypse

Day one: “This isn’t so bad.”
Day three: “I’m going to pass away in here.”
Some of these chemical nightmares smell like they’ve been used as a set piece in a zombie movie. And there’s always one lad who drops his phone in there and, instead of letting it go to Valhalla, goes in after it.

💸 3. The Highway Robbery Bar Prices

I swear, festival bars run on a different economy. ÂŁ9 for a pint of lager that tastes like regret? ÂŁ12 for a watered-down rum and coke?
At this point, I might as well sell my tent on Facebook Marketplace to fund a round.

🪑 4. Chair People in the Pit

This is not Glastonbury’s “chill-out” zone, Barry. This is the pit. If you unfold your little camping chair and plonk yourself dead centre while Lamb of God are playing, you deserve the mosh pit equivalent of a parking ticket.

🪧 5. Flags the Size of a Small Country

We all love repping our favourite bands, but if your flag is so big NASA can see it from space, maybe don’t wave it directly in front of the main stage.
We get it, Steve — you’re from Doncaster and you like Slipknot. Now shift before I start crowd-surfing over you.

🛏️ 6. That One Guy Who Brings a Full Mattress

How did you get it in? Why did you bring it? Who carried it? (Spoiler: it was poor Gav.)
This isn’t the Hilton. You’re sleeping in a tent, mate. A real festival bed is an air mattress that deflates by 2am, leaving you with a spine shaped like a question mark.

☔ 7. British Weather Being a Troll

One minute you’re sweating buckets, the next you’re knee-deep in mud and building an ark out of Red Bull cans.
Half the crowd’s topless, half are in ponchos, and one bloke is wearing nothing but a snorkel.

🔊 8. The Sound Guy’s “Creative Choices”

It’s not a proper festival until the bass eats everything, the guitars vanish into the ether, and the vocals sound like they’re being screamed from inside a portaloo three miles away.

🐌 9. The Slow-Walkers

You’ve got exactly four minutes to leg it from the Sophie Stage to the main arena, but oh no — you’re trapped behind three blokes walking slower than a doom metal intro. MOVE, BUTT!

🪕 10. People Who Won’t Shut Up During Ballads

There you are, emotional, lighter in hand, Nothing Else Matters echoing through the crowd… and Sharon behind you is having a full conversation about her cat’s digestive issues. Sharon, please.

🍗 BONUS: The Mystery Meat Food Stall

Every festival has one. It’s 2am, you’re starving, and that “chicken” burger you just bought has the texture of a well-worn Doc Marten. You eat it anyway, because you’re metal, and regret it for the next 48 hours.

🏕️ BONUS: Tent Thieves & Peg Bandits

You go to sleep happy. You wake up to find someone’s nicked your tent pegs, and now your home is doing its best impression of a sad, collapsed soufflé.

Metal festivals are glorious chaos — and we wouldn’t change it for the world. But if you see me queuing for the bar behind Chair Guy, under Flag Guy’s parachute, in the rain, after eating a mystery burger…
…well, just know I’m silently screaming inside.
