A thunderous tribute by The Riff Report Blog
“If you think you’re too old to rock ‘n’ roll, then you are.” – Lemmy
⚔️ DECEMBER 28, 2015 – WHEN ROCK LOST ITS RENEGADE
The engines of rock ‘n’ roll stuttered and coughed on December 28, 2015. The whiskey bottle stopped rattling. The slot machine went dark. And Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister, the immortal warlord of Motörhead, left us for Valhalla.
Lemmy wasn’t just in Motörhead. He was Motörhead.
The band. The lifestyle. The chaos. The loudness.
He lived faster, played harder, and gave fewer shits than anyone before or after. 🖕🥃
🎸 WHO WAS LEMMY?
A Wolverhampton-born badass with a gravel-pit voice and a cowboy hat, Lemmy redefined what it meant to be a frontman. He played his bass like a chainsaw, sang like sandpaper on steel, and fronted one of the loudest bands in history.
- Started out as a roadie for Jimi Hendrix (no pressure, butt).
- Joined Hawkwind, got booted for being too wild, and said: “Sod it. I’ll make my own band.”
- Formed Motörhead in 1975.
Named after a song about speed. Fitting.
With Motörhead, Lemmy ripped the roof off rock, punk, and metal. Songs like:
- “Ace of Spades” – The gambling anthem to end all anthems.
- “Overkill”, “Bomber”, “Iron Fist” – Raw, relentless, and rebellious.
- “Killed by Death” – Lemmy’s unofficial autobiography.
☠️ LEMMY’S LIFESTYLE: A MASTERCLASS IN MAYHEM
You know that phrase “sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll”? Lemmy invented the graduate-level version of that.
- Whiskey + Marlboros = Breakfast
- Groupies? He didn’t kiss and tell. Mostly because he was too busy playing pinball.
- Drugs? “Speed kept me going, but rock ‘n’ roll kept me alive.”
Lemmy didn’t try to be rock ‘n’ roll.
He was rock ‘n’ roll’s final form.
The last outlaw.
⚰️ THE DAY HE DIED
After years of warning that he was immortal, Lemmy was diagnosed with aggressive cancer on December 26, 2015. He passed just two days later, sitting at home, playing his favourite video game and watching the History Channel.
“Lemmy died with his boots on, as he would’ve wanted.” – Motörhead statement
The tributes flooded in:
- Metallica: “We’ve lost a god.”
- Dave Grohl: Got a Lemmy tattoo that night.
- Ozzy Osbourne: “He was my hero. He was everyone’s hero.”
- Even the Royal Mail said, “Rest in noise, Lemmy.”
⚡️ MOTÖRHEAD: SPEED, THUNDER, AND NOISE
Lemmy and Motörhead invented speed metal before the term existed.
They were too metal for punk, too punk for metal — and that’s what made them unstoppable.
Motörhead weren’t about solos or style. They were a fist in your throat with a Marshall stack behind it.
- Lemmy’s mic? Tilted skyward. Because Lemmy doesn’t look up to anyone.
- Lemmy’s voice? Like the roar of a tank with a throat infection.
- Lemmy’s bass? Played like a third guitar — fuzzed, filthy, ferocious.
🎰 LEMMY’S LOUNGE & LEGACY
Even in death, Lemmy would not shut up.
Here’s how his memory keeps kicking your arse:
- Rainbow Bar & Grill (Hollywood) has a shrine to Lemmy — complete with his ashes in the bar.
- He’s been immortalised as an action figure, a comic book, and a Funko Pop.
- Fans scattered his ashes at festivals, over racetracks, and into whiskey bottles.
- His ashes were even made into bullets and given to friends. No joke. Lemmy literally goes out with a bang.
“Lemmy is not dead. He just went to the next gig.” – Metal Hammer
🧨 BEST LEMMY QUOTES (EVER)
“Born to lose. Lived to win.”
“We are Motörhead. And we play rock ‘n’ roll.”
“Death is inevitable. That’s why you should live a life worth remembering.”
“If I moved in next door, your lawn would die.”
🎧 ESSENTIAL LISTENING (FOR HEADBANGERS ONLY)
- Ace of Spades – Your starter kit for chaos
- Overkill – Because one drum intro ain’t enough
- The Chase is Better Than the Catch – Lemmy’s romantic philosophy
- Rock Out – The name says it all
- Bomber – Napalm in audio form
- Iron Fist – For the moshpit in your soul
- Killed by Death – The anthem to outlive us all
- Motorhead (Live at Hammersmith) – The LOUD way to say goodbye
🕯️ THE IMMORTAL WAR MACHINE
When Lemmy died, it wasn’t just the end of a life — it was the end of an era.
No more bands like Motörhead.
No more voices like Lemmy.
No more whiskey-soaked wisdom from the man who told God to “turn it up.”
But he never really left. Lemmy is etched in every snarling riff, every biker patch, every tattoo of the Snaggletooth mascot.
He’s the reason some of us first picked up a bass. Or a bottle. Or both.
So next time you feel like the world’s gone soft…
🔥 Play it loud
🔥 Pour one out
🔥 And shout:
LEMMY LIVES!
IAN “LEMMY” KILMISTER
