By The Riff Report โ where the amps are loud, and the brain cells optional
You ever watch a movie so gloriously stupid that you feel more intelligent after watching it? Thatโs Airheads, butt! ๐ฅ A film that asks the all-important question: What if a struggling rock band held a radio station hostage just to get their demo played? Spoiler alert: chaos, incompetence, and a whole lotta 90s hair.
๐ค Plot (If You Can Call It Thatโฆ)
Meet The Lone Rangers โ which is somehow both plural and completely missing the point of the word โLone.โ ๐ Brendan Fraser is Chazz Darby, the leather-wearing frontman with a demo tape and a dream. He’s backed by Steve Buscemi (yes, really) as Rex, the โtough guyโ bassist, and Adam Sandler as Pip, the lovable himbo drummer with a water gun full of hot sauce and no thoughts behind his eyes.
Theyโre broke, pissed off, and ignored by the record industry โ so naturally, they decide to sneak into a rock radio station and force them at water-gunpoint to play their track. As you do. ๐
๐ง The Vibes: A Mixtape of Madness
This movie is pure 90s rock chaos. Think Wayneโs World but with more felonies. Itโs a time capsule of flannel shirts, cassette tapes, and the last gasp of hair metal before grunge kicked it in the balls.
Youโve got:
- ๐ป A greasy radio exec played by Michael McKean (whoโs basically Ned Flanders if he ran Kerrang)
- ๐ A SWAT team that somehow doesnโt realise the โgunsโ are filled with ketchup
- ๐งผ A very confused hostage who wants to play Lemmy in Dungeons & Dragons
- ๐ธ Lemmy himself popping up to answer โWhoโd win in a fight, Lemmy or God?โ
โTrick question. Lemmy is God.โ โ Tidy cameo, that. ๐
๐ฌ Best Lines That Deserve To Be On T-Shirts:
- โI don’t want to be a goddamn dancer!โ
- โWe’re not metal, we’re rock and roll! Itโs a lifestyle!โ
- โYouโre disrespecting a future army marine!โ
Honestly, itโs the kind of film where half the cast sounds like theyโre ad-libbing, and the other half are trying not to laugh. And thatโs what makes it lush.
๐งจ Why It Rocks (And Also Why It Sucks โ In a Good Way)
Why it rocks:
- Fraser, Sandler, and Buscemi are the stupidest trio of legends ever assembled.
- The satire on rock sell-outs vs true artists still hits today (lookinโ at you, TikTok bands).
- The soundtrack SLAPS. White Zombie, Primus, Motorhead, Anthraxโฆ itโs like a Steelhouse Festival in VHS form.
Why itโs a mess (in the best way):
- Zero logic. Honestly, itโs dumber than a soggy baguette.
- The pacing occasionally faceplants harder than a drummer on a slippery stage.
- Donโt look for character development โ thereโs more depth in a kiddie pool.
๐ค Final Riff
Airheads is the cinematic equivalent of smashing your guitar just because it looks cool โ reckless, loud, and completely unnecessaryโฆ but bloody fun. If youโve ever played in a band, screamed into a mic, or just wanted to rage against the machine (or be Rage Against the Machine), this oneโs for you.
It wonโt win Oscars, but it might win your heartโฆ or at least your respect for the sheer balls of a band trying to make it by committing musical terrorism. ๐
๐ค Riff Report Rating:
4/5 Flaming Marshalls ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ
+1 bonus point if you ever tried to break into Kerrang! with a demo CD.
Cโmon butt, crank it up and give it a rewatch.
And remember: Never sell out. Unless youโre selling out Wembley. Then weโll allow it.
