Back in the glory days when MTV still played music (remember that? Feels like a fever dream now 😅), bands weren’t just fighting for airtime — they were battling censors, moral panics, and pearl-clutching parents. If your video got banned, it usually meant one thing: you’d made it.

Here’s our countdown of the 10 music videos MTV banned — some for being too sexy, some for being too violent, and some just for being Rammstein. Let’s dive in, butt. 🎸🍺

1. Nine Inch Nails – “Happiness in Slavery” (1992)

Industrial legends NIN didn’t just push the envelope, they set fire to it, stamped on it, and filmed the remains. This video? A man strips naked, straps himself into a sadistic machine, and gets crushed, pierced, and ripped apart while classical music plays. 😱

MTV’s reaction: “Absolutely not.” 🚫

Trent Reznor’s reaction: shrugs in goth. 🖤

2. Madonna – “Justify My Love” (1990)

The Queen of Controversy delivered a black-and-white video packed with same-sex kisses, whips, masks, and a hotel room party your nan would not approve of. 🕶️💋

MTV banned it, but Madonna laughed all the way to the bank when she sold it on VHS as the first-ever “video single.” She basically invented OnlyFans before OnlyFans.

3. The Prodigy – “Smack My Bitch Up” (1997)

MTV freaked out big time over this one. Shot entirely from a first-person perspective, it shows a night of drinking, drugs, fights, strip clubs, and sheer chaos. The infamous twist ending? The wild-eyed protagonist is revealed to be a woman. 🔥

MTV banned it almost everywhere, but it became an underground cult classic. Liam Howlett probably just grinned and went back to setting fire to stages.

4. Pearl Jam – “Jeremy” (1992)

One of the most powerful videos ever made. Eddie Vedder and co. tried to highlight teen isolation and school violence. The original ending shows Jeremy putting a gun in his mouth in front of his classmates.

MTV hacked it apart to “tone it down,” which ended up confusing the message. Vedder was tamping. 😡

5. Tool – “Prison Sex” (1993)

Leave it to Tool to drop a stop-motion nightmare featuring creepy dolls, shadowy figures, and heavy themes of abuse. It was art. It was disturbing. It was very… Tool.

MTV gave it a couple of late-night plays before locking it away forever. Maynard probably just said, “Good.”

6. Rammstein – “Mein Teil” (2004)

Inspired by a real German cannibal case (you know the one 🥩), this video features Till Lindemann in a chef’s hat while the band writhe around in blood, fire, and latex.

Even in the anything-goes 2000s, MTV weren’t having it. Rammstein probably saw the ban as free promo.

7. Mötley Crüe – “Girls, Girls, Girls” (1987)

Filmed in a strip club, featuring… well, strippers. MTV demanded cuts for nudity. Even after editing, the video was still basically Vince Neil stumbling around a neon-lit gentleman’s club. 🍑

The Crüe called that “just another Tuesday.”

8. Body Count – “Cop Killer” (1992)

Ice-T’s metal band lit a fire under America with this track. Politicians, police unions, and tabloids all piled on. MTV wanted none of that heat, so they pulled it fast.

To this day, “Cop Killer” is one of the most infamous banned songs/videos ever.

9. Rihanna – “S&M” (2011)

Chains, latex, whips, bananas — you name it, RiRi brought it. Some countries slapped it with an R-rating, MTV cut it to shreds, and in certain regions it got banned outright.

Rihanna’s response? “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but chains and whips excite me.” 👑

10. Beastie Boys – “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)” (1986)

Hard to believe now, but MTV originally hesitated to air this beer-spraying anthem of chaos. They thought it glorified bad behaviour (it did), underage drinking (it did), and general delinquency (definitely did).

Eventually, they caved… and the Beasties became legends. 🍺🎉

🤘 So What’s the Verdict?

If MTV banned your video, it didn’t mean you failed — it meant you were too real for cable. Most of these bands wore the bans like badges of honour. In fact, the bans only made fans want to see the videos more.

MTV might’ve tried to censor rock ‘n’ roll, but let’s be honest: nothing could stop the chaos. 🔥🎸
