“NOTHING ABOUT US WITHOUT US”

Alright, you beautiful bunch of riff-lovin’ legends — July’s not just for sunburn, warm cider and festival chaos. It’s also Disability Pride Month, and here at The Riff Report, we’re cranking up the volume on inclusion, pride, and a community that’s been kicking ass and smashing barriers for decades. 💪🎸

This ain’t about pity, sympathy, or the usual token nod. This is PRIDE — with a capital ‘GET OUTTA OUR WAY’. Disabled folks have been front and centre in shaping the world of music, activism, art, gaming, comedy, and chaos, and it’s high time we celebrated that the same way we celebrate a new Iron Maiden tour — LOUDLY, OBSESSIVELY, and WITH FIRE. 🔥♿🤘

🗓️ So… What Is Disability Pride Month Anyway?

Every July, Disability Pride Month rolls in like a monster riff and says: “We’re here, we’re proud, and we’ve got stories to tell.” 🎤

It started in the US back in 1990, marking the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) — a law that finally said, “Oi, maybe disabled people should have rights too, you muppets.” Over the years, it’s grown into a worldwide celebration of disabled identity, resilience, visibility, and joy.

This isn’t some corporate awareness campaign shoved in between ad breaks. It’s a grassroots, full-throttle, community-led celebration that says:

🧡 We’re not broken.
🧡 We’re not tragic.
🧡 We’re bloody brilliant — just the way we are.

🎨 The Disability Pride Flag – Colours That ROAR

Forget muted tones and sad violins — the Disability Pride Flag is as bold as a Slayer setlist. ⚡

Originally created by disabled artist Ann Magill, the redesigned 2021 version is bursting with meaning:

  • 🖤 Black background – Honouring lives lost to ableism, neglect, abuse, and lack of access to care.
  • ❤️ Red stripe – Physical disabilities
  • 💛 Gold stripe – Neurodivergence (autism, ADHD, dyslexia, etc.)
  • 🤍 White stripe – Invisible and undiagnosed disabilities
  • 💙 Blue stripe – Psychiatric disabilities and mental illness
  • 💚 Green stripe – Sensory disabilities (like blindness, deafness, etc.)

It zigzags across the flag because disability isn’t linear — it’s chaotic, messy, powerful, and beautifully unique. 🌀

🤘 Disability and Rock ‘n’ Roll – More Connected Than You Think

Let’s get one thing straight: disabled people have always been part of rock and metal — whether you knew it or not. From stage-diving wheelchair warriors to artists who battle chronic pain and neurodivergence, the rock scene is bursting with untold stories.

🎤 Rick Allen of Def Leppard lost his arm in a car accident and came back harder, faster, louder. The man literally re-learned how to drum with one arm. ICON.

🎸 Ian Dury had polio as a child, walked with a limp, and gave us anthems like Spasticus Autisticus – a defiant, snarling middle finger to ableist norms.

💥 Many neurodivergent musicians (from Billie Eilish to Thom Yorke) have channelled their unique brains into music that’s raw, emotional, and unforgettable.

🦼 Meanwhile, every festival pit you’ve seen has probably had a crowd-surfer in a wheelchair bringing the energy harder than half the band. Legends. Tidy.

💬 This Month’s Themes? Representation, Accessibility, and Attitude

While there’s no official theme for 2025, the disability community’s been shouting loud and clear about a few key riffs:

🔊 Representation

Disabled people aren’t just “inspiration stories.” They’re actors, artists, athletes, and anarchists. They deserve screen time, stage time, and headline slots — not just token mentions.

🛗 Accessibility

If your venue has 20 flights of stairs, zero ramps, and toilets that look like a broom cupboard, sort it out mun. Access isn’t a luxury — it’s a right.

🧠 Mental Health Matters

Disability Pride includes psychiatric and mental health disabilities — and it’s about time we stopped pretending otherwise. Depression? Anxiety? PTSD? You belong here too.

🌍 Intersectionality

Being disabled intersects with race, gender, class, sexuality, and culture. We need to amplify those stories too — especially those who’ve been silenced far too long.

🎉 How to Celebrate Disability Pride Month (And Not Be a Nobhead About It)

Wanna be an ally this July? Here’s how to not be a bellend and actually help:

🧡 Support Disabled Creators

Buy from disabled artists. Stream disabled musicians. Read books by disabled writers. Share their links, boost their voices, and don’t just lurk — engage.

🧠 Educate Yourself

Google is free, butt. Learn about ableism. Watch documentaries like Crip Camp. Follow activists like Hannah Gadsby, Alice Wong, or Imani Barbarin.

♿ Check Your Own Spaces

If you run a venue, a blog, a shop, or a Discord server — ask: Is this actually accessible? Can someone with mobility, sensory or mental health needs use it with ease?

🧏‍♀️ Learn Something New

Try learning a bit of British Sign Language. Add alt-text to your images. Use subtitles. Make the internet a more inclusive place, one TikTok at a time.

🎶 Shout Loud, Not Over

Lift disabled voices without speaking over them. Use your platform to amplify, not hijack. If you’re a festival organiser, hire disabled performers, provide access viewing platforms, and don’t forget the bloody ramps.

✊ Famous Quotes That Slap Harder Than a Drum Solo

“Disability is not a brave struggle or ‘courage in the face of adversity’… disability is an art. It’s an ingenious way to live.”
Neil Marcus

“We’re not here to inspire you. We’re here to live our lives — just like you.”
Stella Young

“If I can survive cancer, drum with one arm, and tour the world, you can build a f***ing ramp.”
Probably Rick Allen, in spirit at least 🎸🔥

🏁 Final Thoughts – Disabled Pride Is Rock ’n’ Roll As Hell

Being disabled means existing in a world that often wasn’t built for you — and still living, loving, creating, performing, laughing, moshing, and absolutely slaying it anyway.

So this July, don’t just post a flag and call it a day. Celebrate, support, listen, shout, and fight for access. Whether you’re disabled or an ally, this is your cue to make some noise.

Because disabled lives aren’t background noise — they’re the main riff, the chorus, and the final encore. 🎤🔥
